Welcome: A 17 year old person and their political views

 Yo,

This is Mychal May, a 17 year old person living in Washington! Although my blog is a requirement for my AP Government class, know that I am also really excited to find the intersections between sociology and political science.

When I first got my political ideology test results back, I felt myself enter a defensive state out of bewilderment: a Disaffected Democrat. Perhaps it was the "Disaffected" that offended me the most; my skin color and gender make for a person that is anything but disaffected when living in America--scratch that, any place in the world. However, Typology, the site in which I took the test, provided me with a description that I related to the most when compared to any of the other political ideologies.

I cannot describe the exact time to which I began to identify as a democrat, and or liberal, but my sense of empathy, community, and my understanding of what my skin color meant in this country, was always present. In my elementary school, emphasis on sustainability through gardening classes was the foundation to my need for environmental policies wherever I fell on the political compass. I believe what was truly impactful besides having democrat parents and living in a progressive city, was in 2008, when Barack Obama was elected as the first black president the United States. Seeing my parents, and the rest of my community so proud was a game changer.

So, a disaffected democrat? What is that? Based on my results on the Typology quiz, I differ from a solid liberal because of my lack of trust in the government. At least, that's what I feel was the deciding factor in whether I would be a assigned a solid liberal or a Disaffected Democrat. But don't get me wrong, I believe in voting, and I will be voting in state elections once I am 18 as well as the 2024 presidential election. My thoughts on the government reside in believing there to be a patriarchy that is meant to further oppress minorities systemically, and I am fed up with the relationship this country has built between the oppressor and the oppressed.

Lastly, although I agree with foreign policy strictly for peace relations, intervening in other country's violently, to exploit for resources, to indoctrinate, or for governmental affairs (imperialistic efforts) will never be okay in my idea of a what a prosperous and equitable country should be.

Anyhow, I believe that whoever is to read my post will soon be able to further understand more of how I think, and my thoughts on political science, as I hope to deconstruct American politics not just for a class, but for my own enjoyment.
